Motive Power by Philip H. Turnercategory : SF & ALTERNATE REALITY

In this second look into events in and around the bordering kingdoms of Camerland and Norland, there is more lawlessness, but at a higher level. Government departments are supposed to be operated for the benefit of the population, but they are run by ambitions politicians, who seek to maximize their own slice of the cake and their own prestige.
Everything goes when the politicians are working to secure their own future, and anyone who gets in their way is in trouble if that person is unable to look after himself or herself. Everything goes when Concerned Citizens see injustice and try to do something about it.
Investigator and security consultant Alex Cardinal makes another appearance, and the reader is introduced to the sport of devrachtigiering. A complex web of career salvation, treachery, abduction, death and dangerous sports comes to a climax with a perilous rescue at sea.
