 70: The cowboys are back

barriers

The crossing at the Stock Dove pub is to be converted into a controlled one with traffic lights with work starting on February 10th and going on for 10 weeks!
As well as stacking loads of barriers at the pub, surveyors have been going mad on the north side of Compstall Road, on the left of the picture, tagging the pavement from the rear entrance to Romiley Park all the way down to Sandy Lane with hieroglyphs in a variety of colours. The south side of the road has been let off very lightly.
Back in 2010, when the island was inserted into the road, people were wondering why they didn't just paint a pedestrian crossing on the road and save all the messing about. That question remains unanswered.

71: The barriers deployed, the island has gone!

72: A big pile of dirt covered with removed paving slabs then a long trench in front of the rear entrance to Romiley park with some corrugated pipe sections at the rubble end . . .

The trench in front of the rear entrance to Romiley park in all its glory with new kerb stones.

More paving ripped up in front of the shop between the park entrance and the Esso site.

73: The barriers have been shifted across the road; but deploying them all the way from the entrance to the Stock Dove car park to the road on the west side the pub seems rather excessive!

Most of the work on the north side of the road has been done; apart from the crossing controls

74: Most of the barriers have gone from the Stock Dove side of the road; but not all of them

traffic lights There is now a working crossing but with only a temporary, battery-powered system. There are traffic lights on either side of the road just before the entrance to Romiley Park coming from the east, and another pair of lights on the petrol station side of the park entrance to create a pedestrian corridor.
The controls are placed at the east side of the crossing and consist of a set of traffic lights for motorists and then the signal for pedestrians. The yellow box on the right-hand pole houses the button which pedestrians can use to stop traffic.
The next two pictures show the driver's view when approaching from the east (above) and from the west (below).

75: Overnight closures of this part of Compstall Road were scheduled from 31st March for resurfacing and road markings. This was supposed to take up to 4 nights. In fact, despite a succession of sunny days, the resurfacing wasn't completed until the day before the picture below was taken. No road markings up till then, then markings overnight.
It was back to single-lane traffic because on the other side of the big yellow truck was a bloke with a road drill, who was boring holes in the new road surface where indicated to allow square metal studs to be installed to mark the sides of the new crossing. Still no sign of the permanent furniture with the lights and the button to press.

What the finished roadway with markings and the studs looks like. All we need now is the permanent crossing furniture offered for use.

crossing

The following week, the temporary lights were gone but did we get to use the permanent crossing furniture [below]. Nope. There were cardboard bozes taped across the controls and it was back to single-lane traffic because the barriers were back on the north side of Compstall Road because they were digging the road up just past the petrol station.
